Azelnidipine is a new dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker that selectively acts on L-type calcium channels, with a chemical structure similar to nifedipine, and is used clinically for the treatment of systemic hypertension and angina pectoris, and, to a lesser extent, congestive heart failure. It causes peripheral and coronary vasodilation by inhibiting the entry of calcium ions into excitable tissues. Azelnidipine has a stronger peripheral vasodilatory effect than verapamil, but not as strong an effect on cardiac conduction as verapamil
