Properties : Vitamin D is synthesised from various components when they are sufficiently exposed to sunlight. The two main natural sources of vitamin D are cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3, which is found in animals) and ergocalciferol (Vitamin D2, which is mainly found in plants).
The general function of vitamin D is to increase the plasma concentrations of Ca and P to levels sufficient for bone mineralisation and other organic functions. It has also been observed that Vitamin D is necessary for embryonic development in chickens and that it performs additional functions in a wide variety of cells, glands and organs.

Requirements :Under modern farming conditions, many animals, especially swine and poultry, are reared in closed installations with very little or no exposure to sunlight and need dietary supplements of this vitamin.

Target species : Pigs, poultry and ruminants.
